Introduction

Tianjin University, being China’s first modern university and formerly known as Peiyang University, has a prestigious history of pioneering scientific and technological developments. The School of New Media and Communication (SNMC), an integral component of Tianjin University, was founded in 2019. The school is academically-driven and devoted to multi-disciplinary research in the realm of new media and communication. Positioned at the nexus of communication and AI engineering, it aims to pioneer scientific inquiries in areas such as digital journalism, global media communication, AI and communication, and algorithm governance. Despite its relatively recent establishment, the school has garnered an A- rating in the Times Higher Education China Subject Ratings 2024.

At SNMC, we constantly adapt our student curriculum to tackle the complex challenges of the new media era. Our goal is to provide multi-disciplinary training that covers not only traditional journalism and communication skills, but also the ability to integrate new media and AI technologies into research and practice. We strive to cultivate well-rounded talents who excel in both theoretical reasoning and practical application, while possessing integrated virtues in both skills and morality. Our aim is to prepare future generations in new media and communication for roles that will contribute meaningful value to society, both in China and globally.

We have a dynamic and inclusive faculty team. The team spans diverse academic areas including Journalism and Communication, Computer Science, Cyberspace Security, Management, and Psychology. Our faculty members also have a varied educational background. Some have studied or worked in countries such as Germany, Australia, Belgium, and Singapore, while others have earned their degree domestically and specialized in China’s theories and practices of journalism and communication.
